Omarchy Tokyo Meetup vol.1

Omarchy Tokyo Meetup vol.1 was held on Thursday, September 10 at KOMOJU in Kichijoji, Tokyo. I took part both as the venue host on the KOMOJU side and as someone who wanted to learn more about Omarchy.

This was the second Omarchy Tokyo meetup. The first one (vol.0) had around ten people, and we spent the time installing Omarchy on our laptops, which was fun in its own way. This time there were more than thirty attendees, plus pizza and drinks courtesy of KOMOJU, and nine speakers covered a wide range of topics: Omarchy Quattro, plugins, window managers, KVM, Japanese input methods and fonts, UMPCs, and how people actually use Omarchy day to day.

I’m astonished by how far the Linux desktop has come. My first distribution was CentOS in the late 2000s, and I remember that almost everything involved far more toil back then. These days we can simply ask an AI for most of it. Someone at the meetup said that Omarchy brought back the excitement of burning a live CD of a Linux distribution and booting it for the first time. Things are much easier now, but I think I feel something similar.

Overall, it was a good meetup for discussing Omarchy, its ecosystem, and related topics. I also picked up a few things I hadn’t known about, such as CachyOS and the GPD MicroPC. I have been using Linux for more than a decade, but I have never done much beyond what a casual user does, and I have never been an early adopter. It was a meetup that someone like that could enjoy too. Many thanks to Komagata-san and Togo-san for organizing the event, and to all the speakers.
